Tech meetup in London and Bucharest…
Sara, Anca and I attended Minibar in London - a technology meetup where a few companies gave 10 minute presentations of their latest software to the large tech crowd in attendance.
The evening started off strong with entrepreneurial innovator, astronaut(!), and “Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life†of Ubuntu - Mark Shuttleworth, discussing the release of Ubuntu 7.04. He ended with some brief, but very important advice for entrepreneurs to believe in what they are doing and go after something that will be truly innovative rather than “simply doing what Forbes magazine says will earn them millions of dollars†or… “trying to be the next Cisco”.
This was followed by more presentations… mostly early stage social networking sites. An interesting presentation and hands-on demonstration came from Alexander Straub from truphone - a service that routes calls over the internet versus traditional mobile providers allowing free and very cheap international mobile to mobile. It also maintains traditional functionality to automatically utilize traditional mobile providers when Wi-Fi is not available.
We will host some similar meetups in Bucharest in the next couple of weeks and going forward on a variety of entrepreneurial topics such as blogging for business, eco-friendly architecture, the latest consumer trends in Romania and beyond…
More to follow…
