Tea at the…church

Opportunity:  opening a tea spot in Bucharest

I read Sara’s post from earlier this month on “Ceai la Cotroceni” and I thought that indeed she’s right, there are not that many tea houses in Bucharest. Let alone smoke free ones. For more on tea houses I found this interesting blog post “Ceai si povesti La Metoc“.

And I remembered about a tea house opened in a church. Isn’t that something? A priest became a business man. He opened a tea house in his church, and promised to give all profits to charity. The tea house has church inspirational music which creates a relaxing, meditative atmosphere. Of course this is a smoking-free place, which is a good thing for non-smokers. In addition, the priest is always around and encourages discussions on religious topics or just on topics that are of interest to the young customers. Could this be a successful business model for tea-houses? Anyway, he gets my vote for originality.

I don’t think so… I mean, there are not too many tea houses in Bucharest… but at the church? I don’t think that the people that usually go to church would make a visit to such a place…

Arwen, we’ll see if you are right long term. For now, maybe because of the novelty of the place, they have a nice crowd. Mostly young people who sometimes attend church services or just social conscientious people for whom it is important that profits go to charity. And let’s not underestimate the discussions around a cup of tea. Some philosophy students may be thrilled. And the prices…which are bellow 1 leu.

Besides, I don’t think the clientelle of this is the usual crowd of a tea house, but more of the ones who would not go generally to a tea house. Could this be consider a “Blue-ocean” strategy?
