Business opportunity: Plumbing services
The people at Metropotam made an interesting point today….It’s very difficult to find a professional plumber if none of your relatives/colleagues/friends recommend someone to you. The options are pretty limited - mesterul online (one of their recommendations) is a start, but still not very convincing, as the available directories take quite a lot of time to browse and don’t seem very reliable; with the majority of the “professionals” listed there only providing a mobile phone number. And, let’s face it, in some cases, when the kitchen floor is under water, who’s patient enough to browse them?

Well, the fact is that people need this kind of service and they need the guarantee that there are professionals who perform it. Thus, it would be a good opportunity for a company to activate in the business of professional plumbing services. Trained workers, showing up on time and meeting the deadlines, the ability to provide feedback and a quality control measure are some of the things that differentiate between plumbing service companies. As positive word-of-mouth is important in this kind of services, an aggressive online strategy, a well optimized website with a forum where clients can make comments and share their experiences with the team of professional plumbers would be the solution.
What do you think? Would that help you make a choice?

Well I think that the missing link here is the connection between the handyman who knows everything a desperate household needs and the “brain” who’s able to prmote him. The people over 50 are good assets! They’re not the hot buddies from the AXE commercial but they’ll offer realiable (and cheap) services!

I think it’s quite a struggle to get an over 40 handyman to give up his freedom, especially when they are needed so much and they have clients. Maybe act as an intermediary for them but then how can you be certain the job is well done? Accepting a boss is a difficult thing for them.

It’s not really the industry where you can measure performance. It’s working or not! And they will not have a boss only an “orders supplier”.

I’m not talking about measuring performance. I’m talking about 100% “referenceable” clients.

[...] As Laura posted earlier about plumbers, this is a tremendous opportunity for a small firm that delivers services people need in an emergency. Young professionals don’t usually have friends who care to improvise electrical repairs. Many wouldn’t trust a neighbor, either, in spite of Zoso’s suggestion (see screenprint). However, creating an online professional presence, perhaps linking to endorsements from happy clients posting on forums and blogs, is likely to attract a large base of well-paying clients.
