Opportunity: Canned Watermelon Rind Jam
This is a product that’s easy to obtain, the recipe is very simple and in the summer watermelons are extremely cheap, almost sold for nothing.

Many Romanians still undertake massive canning projects throughout summer and autumn to ensure a winter supply of food they can trust. But as a stronger middle class evolves, people are busy with work and don’t have time to can their own jams or fruits.
That’s what would make this idea a success… as people are used to locally canned products but are unable to make them anymore….lack of time, comfort, inexperienced in the kitchen etc. On the other hand, there is strong domestic familiarity of this product, as many children are raised with different kinds of jams.
Though watermelons are a summer product, new metods of storing watermelon in large freezers ensures raw material for the whole year.
One way this product could make it on the market is by opening a factory of mass production, branding and distribution to grocery stores. There are also significant opportunities for branding under highly profitable private labels in supermarkets.
A factory of canned foods can extend its product range by introducing this completely new product. It is mandatory that the brand is associated with high-quality and ecologic (or organic) standards.
Even more interesting opportunities involve taking it across borders and creating a unique image of Romania’s traditional canned foods industry. Though challenging, this would be extremely profitable.
