Office delivery salads

Opportunity: healthy food - catering for offices

There is a growing health consciousness among young professionals in large cities in Romania. These are high-income eco-conscious consumers who spend long days at the office. A monthly subscription service can offer these peoples the choice of a different salad each day.

Having a healthy lunch can be a challenge if you live in one of Romania’s large cities. If the temptation of grabbing some junk food is not that powerful, then you must wait, because the salad you are dreaming about is just home or, perhaps more realistic, divided in a supermarket vegetables department.

You can order some pizza, pasta or even schwarma (pita bread with rotisserie meat). Some grocery stores have begun offering bagged salads, but these are five times the price of the unprocessed ingredients, and offer limited choice.

This opens an opportunity for a service that would deliver customized salads to the office - allowing people to create a salad each day, online or by phone, just by choosing ingredients from a large list. Broadband-enabled office workers will readily embrace web-based order forms, especially interactive forms that count calories and nutrients.
The delivery could be made each day at a specified time, so that it’s easier for the catering company to deliver it as fresh as possible. From the diversity of salad ingredients, each customer could choose what he wants: tomatoes, cucumbers, green salad, carrots, cabbage, seafood, apples, cheese, endive, spinach, broccoli, casava, beans and many, many other delicious and healthy foods. As chains of supply for organic produce expand, organic versions for many ingredients could be added - a personalized and fresh menu that you can’t keep in the refrigerator, neither bring every day from home to office.

As an extra touch, the service could ensure container recycling for regular subscription customers by picking up yesterday’s containers at each delivery.

[...] Clarisa and Laurentiu were writing about the need for similar businesses in Bucharest earlier - delivery salads and fresh fruit stands. I think that the supermarket approach to distribution is very well suited to city business centers, as it offers people the choice of ready-made healthy food in the place where they do usually shop for lunch anyway. Every time someone in a supermarket buying a loaf of bread and a couple of slices of cheese for lunch, that person could instead be selecting one from a couple dozen varieties of ready-made sandwiches.
