No statistics for vegetarians in Romania

A first vegetarian restaurant in Bucharest
In an effort to answer an earlier question - what is the estimated percentage of vegetarians in Romania? - I called the local vegetarian association (”Societatea Vegetarienilor din Romania“). They were very friendly and helpful; however, there are no reliable sources for this information. There is an old study from the early 90’s that gives a 4% figure, but it is highly unreliable. As vegetarians are a small percentage of the population in any country, you need a very large sample; and even then, data errors are 1-2%, which is extremely high when we’re talking about percentages this small.
Our contact also introduced us to the first vegetarian restaurant in Bucharest. I was initially very enthusiastic - until I realized it was part of an esoteric club that offers services such as bioresonance, astrology, parapsychology, and a library of esoteric books. The menu makes for rather hilarious reading, with items such as “Sublime” bread, “The Taste of the Earth” salad (”a combination of seven elements, charged with the Energy of the Earth”), and “Energy and Purification” water. Ridicule aside… this menu doesn’t offers only a handful of items beyond the usual fare of a couple of salads, “cascaval pane” and mamaliga.
I plan to test it with a couple of friends… mainly to find out if this place is an option for non-members of MISA.

[...] With an estimate of about US$2 billion spent on fast food at the end of 2005 and an annual average sales growth of 26% the Romanian fast-food market is impressive. My colleagues Sara and Alex already blogged about the lack of “green” restaurants. A healthy fast-food chain would be more than welcome by serious and sometime vegetarians alike. As more fast-food fans begin to grasp the environmental impact of eating meat and choose a (semi) vegetarian diet opportunities will no doubt expand for those entrepreneurs who skillfully combine the two aspects.
