My kid is cooking lunch today…

Opportunity: teach kids how to cook

Oldschool Romanian parents are gone. Nowadays their working time is gradually increasing and they have less and less time for their children. They send them from an early age to do sports, dancing, take art classes and so on…but…what do kids really need to learn? What will they use for the rest of their lives? … cooking…

One may argue that little ones may get injured in these lessons. Yes. They could be injured if parents teach their children how to cook at home, but if you introduce them into a specialized and friendly environment that makes cooking safe and fun to learn, that’s another story. So…who wants to open-up a cooking school for kids? If you think this business idea is funny, take a look at how they did it and see their sales figures (Spoons across America,Batter up kids culinary center). If you like the idea you could start your own business or you could buy a franchise.

I think that is an excellent idea. Besides the fact that kids will find it very useful through out their lives but maybe it could break down the mentality of avoiding the kitchen. For example in a class-room if a boy tells his class-mates that he can cook they will make fun of him…but what if they all could cook?

Yes it is really a great idea. I think it could be also developed for the “not so young”…youngsters leaving parents’ home and discovering they have no idea about cooking. One source of learning is obviously their mothers and family…but what if you want to learn something new… new types of food… or learn how to cook them in a way that is not harmful for the body. This could also be a great idea for a business: School for Healthy Style Cooking. Somebody should think seriously about that.

PS. All of you, keep up the good work!

A recent study shows that young people who prepare their own meals eat much healthier food: http://www.webmd.com/content/article/130/117730?src=RSS_PUBLIC

It seems that the value would lie in going beyond simply cooking classes, to skills such as preparing a grocery list, shopping intelligently and planning meals in advance.

However interesting this may sound, most parents are interested in having their children go to foreign language classes, math preparation, computer usage classes, and perhaps some dance, Karate or other sports. The success of this would depend on finding a number of enlightened parents, a solid marketing approach and making sure that recipes are suitable to today’s quick-paced world - to make the skills actually usable. A good partnership would be with a catering company that offers healthy food to schoolchildren - as it is obvious that parents who opt for that have the right mindset.

I don’t think a catering company would be good because you need special facilities to teach children how to cook, as Alex said. You cannot find such conditions in kindergardens

  6. Bradd Says:

I was thinking of a catering company as a promotion partnership only. You’re right about the need for special facilities.

Forget the children! I want to sign in! :)
