Marketing organic products on the Romanian market

Opportunity: Organic food

Canned food products that will offer organic versions for health-conscious consumers will be able to build a market in Romania as well as export to countries within the region and beyond. Many Romanians still undertake massive canning projects throughout summer and autumn to ensure a winter supply of food they can trust. Although incomes are rising and less time is available, customers are not willing to embrace sugar-laden, preservative-packed canned foods where they do not trust the origin of the fruits and vegetables involved. This opens up a market for producers of organic canned goods.

Distributors will be able to create a supply chain for locally-grown organic products; this can ensure labeling by a well-recognized international certifier, encourage more small farmers to use ecological agriculture, and create consumer recognition that can position the label prominently on the market.

With middle-to-high-income residential areas being built now at an astounding rate in Bucharest and other cities, there will be opportunities for grocery stores that can cater to this market segment. Traditional farmer’s markets service the low-end market segment; newer supermarkets offer limited choices to health-conscious consumers. Creating small but trustworthy organic fruit-and-vegetable stands within the new residential projects will offer a steady and loyal customer base, eager to conveniently select their own fruit.

Restaurants and other eateries find that providing healthy choices for their customers is a great way to differentiate on the Romanian market. For example, Gregory’s, a local sandwich-and-coffee franchise, is recently promoting an image as a healthy place to eat, through advertising that emphasizes the nutritional value of foods and calories burned through different activities. Growing demand for convenient but healthy food will create an opportunity for supplying existing restaurants with organic alternatives.

[...] On BusinessIDEAS.ro, we have previously proposed fruit kiosks for people on the run, organic produce stands, and supply chains for fresh produce. “Fruterias” are a similar business that is obviously very successful elsewhere, made possible by good supply chaining. [...]

[...] Ensure public awareness through strong marketing of organic canned products and show people that you have created an alternative for all the long hours spent in the kitchen each autumn. Combined this with the tremendous popularity and profitability of private labels in the U.S. and other European markets… I think this is a great opportunity that canned products producers should look into and try to expand, don’t you think?
