Opportunity: offering specialized cuisine in Romania

I was writting in one of my previous posts about small specialized stores trying to identify the segment markets where you could really compete with the supermarkets.I was discussing there about bread specialties, giving as an example french bakeries (by the way I’ve seen a very interesting post on French Bakery in Bucharest on Metropotam) Supermarkets will be never able to offer a high range of specialties and sortiments of any type of products. Spices are one product category that is not very well covered in Romania. The regular types of spices (salt, pepper, curry) you can find in any store….but the real special things are difficult or impossible to find.
One opportunity is to open small spice shops that offer a whole range of sortiments and provide examples of recipes for the spices that are not very well known in Romania. I have seen one in Germany that provided, besides spices, tea assortiments. Tea would be even more succesful considering that it is much easier to prepare a tea than Thai food.

This is a great idea!
I am sure the small general grocery stores are feeling the pressure of Carreforre, Metro, Billa, etc. etc. There will always be a need for the “corner store” but certainly a few could convert to a specialty store and profit very nicely.

Yup. Great Idea. There’s an english chef on TVR 2, Jamie Oliver…he always adds a lot of spices to his food…and my parents are upset that you can’t find them in any store in Romania.

Yep. Sometimes is very hard to find the spices you need for some exotic recipe…
