Cowbins……..recycling in Romania

Business Opportunity: Selling innovative recycle bins to municipalities

Everybody needs a little fun in their life.

cowbins

At the same time, everybody needs a little recycling in their life.

At the same time, there are just too many places around town that could use a little “color”.

Enter…. Cowbins.

Whoever said recycling has to be a serious job. Hey, sometimes all people want is just something to make them smile…….and that’s enough to get them to participate.

There’s a great article on Let’sRecycle.com about the latest in recycling technology, and a very successful product and program…..Feed the Cows. What a great idea. Boosted recycling by 61%.

cowbins……….the next big trend in Romania.

So here’s an idea……..introduce cowbins for every town in Romania (even expand it across Eastern Europe)………get it started in a few towns, and let’s see which town can have the best cows. (maybe there’s even some EU funding for something like this).

Are we really talking just about raw material and a few crazy bins here? No, we’re talking about the architecture of public spaces. What is architecture? It’s the life of a space. Does the space where you are right now (or where you travel to work) have a quality of life? Is there a certain quality of light, material, color, or design. Well, so often around town (any town), there’s a lack of this…….just a lot of grey cold concrete and asphalt, with the endless array of cars. But sometimes, one little thing can make the difference. It can take a place that otherwise is just cold and grey, and turn it into a Place.

Romania needs two things………….a little visual fun for public spaces, and recycling. Right now Environment is one of the biggest pushes across the EU. At the same time, a lot of public spaces (parks, streets), need to be able to compete with what’s going on in other places. Cowbins might just be the answer. Does Romania really want England to get all the best cowbins? No!!! Romania can show the others how to do it.

Of course they don’t all have to be black and white guernseys either……maybe some lovely brown ones, and a few reddish ones, and some beautiful golden brown ones. Maybe even a few anguses and longhorns.

And the 2010 Best Cow in Europe award goes to…………Bucharest…………for the best in class anguses and a 72% increase in recycling. Thanks Cowbins, for making our city just al ittle bit cleaner.

Who will take care of all these cows? Who will wash them? The mair and its team? The employees of the companies in charge with collecting the garbage are so brutal.
I understood that all of us would be responsile too feed them, but what about the rest?

I think better than cows is just colorful artwork….no feeding necessary. The brighter and crazier the colors… the better. It will detract from the omnipresent grey of the communist blocks.

The Mayor and the town Council were initially behind the initiative in Lewisham, UK, but now it’s spread to alot of people. For more information, here is an article on the subject: http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/NewsAndEvents/CommunicationsCentre/PressReleases/OctoberDecember2005/FeedTheCows.htm. Beyond just feeding, alot of people are involved with the program…it’s not just something for the government. Schools get involved, kids get involved, communities get involved, recycling companies get involved, and neighborhoods get involved.

The UK is famous for mobilizing large communities and make them action towards a set objective. I think there are a lot of things in this regard that we could learn from them.
