Can you recommend a good hotel - for cheap?

Opportunity: Hotel chain at a moderate price level

A recent discussion on the Yahoo Group “Romania Economics” addresses the problem of tourism-related services in Romania.

“The Romanian tourist industry better raise the bar of service-standards. The general tourist has certain expectations even in the modestly-priced hotels. Electrical sockets that work, lamps that function, walls that are properly repaired and painted, touristic information readily available at the hotel lobby, tourist offices that are actually open when people might visit them. (I could seldom find a listing of accomodations with price ranges attached.)

I’ll never forget my first time in Bacau when the hotel desk clerk could not offer a SINGLE diversion to me. Especially silly, when I discovered (on my own) an art museum, a history museum, a concert hall, several large churches, the big market, the park by the river, the park in the center, the zoo (such as it was - see other post), several nice clubs, etc., etc.”

This may well be a very good opportunity for a modestly-priced hotel chain to emerge. By implementing rather simple measures (regular maintenance etc.) and providing standardized training for staff, such a hotel chain could ensure a consistent level of customer satisfaction at a modest price level.

What about hostels? Cheap and decent, plus some touristic info - I think the youth would love the idea…

For one I think Sara is right, hostels and motels for that matter can’t really offer that many services that a hotel can, besides like Seth Godin said when he spoke at Google….staying at an reasonable priced interesting hotel gives you a story to tell.
