About us

Clarisa
Clarisa: I’m studying Marketing and General Medicine in Bucharest, so I split my time between advertising and anatomy. I like spending time with kids because they have unlimited imagination. My favorite music is South American (especially Brazilian and Cuban).

Laura

Laura: I majored in Business Administration from the Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest and I’m currently a Masters student in Strategic Marketing. I enjoy theater, marketing, Japanese culture, spring, drawing, salsa, colors, tea, Haruki Murakami, lime green, advertising, chocolate, mountains, flip flops, green apples, cooking, “Shawshank Redemption”… Oh, and I recently discovered I want a degree in snowboarding, too!

SaraSara: I majored in Management and Education Science from the University of Bucharest. I have a yearly goal of ten backpacking trips (which is becoming more difficult to achieve every year) and enjoy birdwatching, bird banding - and contemporary classical composers with cool names like Xenaxis and Ligeti.
Alex

Alex: I’m studying in college how to understand and develop a top business under the rules of globalizing markets. I enjoy playing the guitar, swimming and listening to musicians like Bond and Yo-Yo Ma. Besides playing chess, I particularly want to learn how to fly an airplane.

AncaAnca: I majored in European Studies from Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj Napoca and also completed a Master Program in Project Management from SNSPA Bucharest. I am so passionate about Structural and other types of European Funds that sometimes I even dream about them at night. Some of my interests worth mentioning are walking, traveling, theatre, good movies and music. You may even hear me singing now and then….but not in the rain because I’m afraid of catching the flu.
Cristi

Cristi: When I first started studying Management, I became a volunteer in a student’s organization. There I found out how important people are to me and that I enjoy spending time and working with people. I like driving, reading, swimming, sports in general, cars and some PC games, hiking, walking, traveling in general…well, let’s just say that I enjoy life.

Magda: After having studied law in Romania, I got my MBA from Santa Clara University, California. Living in Silicon Valley surrounded by geeks, I had no choice but to learn the computers and internet survival skills. And don’t get me wrong, it is fun and addictive. Nevertheless my hidden dreams are about exotic vacation destinations and finding the occasion to indulge in this longing. Just tell me about an exciting place and I’ll be there next weekend.

“Steve

Steve: I studied Economics at the University of California, San Diego and completed a Masters in International Relations at Tufts’ Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. I worked primarily in technology and business consulting in the U.S. and now do the same in Romania. I was fascinated with the country and the region since following the geo-politics of the cold war in the late eighties and after my first experience living and working there in the mid-nineties. I enjoy travel, reading, swimming, hiking, and museums that include more gadgets and/or art than pottery. My wife and I live in Bucharest.

Raul: I majored as an electrical engineer at the Catholic University in Chile. What motivated me to follow that path was music; all the tools and options that technology gives you open an endless field of opportunities to explore new ideas with a simple guitar. After working for several years in Chile I moved to Canada to get a feeling of a different culture. A year ago I decided it was time to get my MBA so I went back to school in the US. In August I will start my second year. At this time I’m working at Sopolec to get a good feeling of what business consulting is like.

Andreea

Andreea: I believe the beauty of this world can only be found by foot—so I love travelling and discovering new places. I am studying Management at the Academy of Economic Studies, as I think dealing with people is the hardest thing to do and also the most challenging. Because I wanted to do both things at once –travelling and studying I applied at Universidade de Porto, one of Portugal’s universities, where due to a scholarship I will specialize in Management and Marketing. I enjoy dancing, chess, reading, walking, watching movies and helping people.

PeterPeter: I am an MBA student in the U.S. doing a summer internship with SOPOLEC, a business advisory firm in Bucharest. I was drawn to SOPOLEC and Romania because I’m fascinated by the challenges and opportunities of doing business in emerging economies and I love to travel, explore new places and meet new people. I spent last summer in Mexico City, for similar reasons, helping to set up a business incubation program for green entrepreneurs. Prior to that I lived in New York City where I worked for a spin off company of Credit Suisse and, before that, for an internet marketing company, Linkshare. I have a masters in economics and a bachelors in philosophy. It has been a long transition from the abstraction of philosophy to the practicality of business but I retain a love for ideas. In addition to travel I enjoy eating and drinking (in moderation of course), reading and the company and sarcastic banter of good friends.

  3. Bogdan Heretoiu Says:

    Hello everyone,

My name is Bogdan Heretoiu and I live in Miami, Florida - for now.

I am not sure if you can help in any way, but after finding your blog on the net, I thought that I should give it a try.

I will be moving to Romania on August 12th, 2007 after 13 years of being away. I am a filmmaker and I teach film classes at Miami Dade College. My moving to Romania will be something of a permanent sorts I assume (long term anyway, for family reasons), and one of my first steps there is to establish a new company with video/film/photo production and distribution activity. I am shipping enough equipment in order to be self-sufficient from the start - with capabilities to work at US/EU tech standards. What I have very little of, is network assets.. After all these years, I have kept very close to my family and friends - none of them in the same field as I am.

If by any chance you can help, point me in the right direction regarding promotion and start-up support groups (if any), that would be very, very helpful.

Thank you for your time and I hope to receive news from you.

    Best Regards,
    Bogdan Heretoiu

    Hi,

I have gone through your blog and profile. I believe you guys would be able to help me.

I live in the UK at the moment but I need to move to Romania for personal reasons.

I am data mining consultant and just about to finish my doctorate in data mining. I also hold masters degree in Computer Science. I have done some consultancy work with UK Police and also worked on several kinds of data sets from crime to Insurance and Census to Consumer. I have worked on some pan-european security projects.

I have involved in some businesses and recently beed involved in a start-up.

I am wondering if you could guide me to some right kind of place where I can work and use my skills or is it any scope for data mining consultancy there.

Your response would be highly appreciable.

    many thanks,

    Vikas

  6. Steve Says:

    Hi Vikas,

I don’t know of any specific opportunities but I did take a look at ejobs.ro and bestjobs.ro. These are the main job sites in Romania. ejobs has a section on statistics and math related jobs. You can also search “data mining” on each.

I would suggest contacting the companies to see if Romanian language is a requirement. You could also ask them for suggestions on where else to look if they don’t have anything relevant.

IBM Romania might be a good place to start as well.

    Hope this helps.

    Dear Steve,

Thanks for prompt reply and your suggestions. I will have a look on suggested sites.

  11. Ana Maria Constantin Says:

    Hi,
I will move back to Romania soon, after 19 years of living in New York. I would like to open up a Laundromat Center in Bucharest.
Does anybody has any ideas from where i should buy..all the necessary equipment for opening such a business?
    Thanks.
    Ana Maria.

  12. Steve Says:

Hi Ana Maria. Just to confirm… this is washing/drying or dry cleaning? Depending on how big are your plans… a few normal washing machines and dryers could be purchased at any of the large retailers. If you are making a larger order of special ordering “industrial” sized machines… you would talk directly to the distribute. Most of the major brands are here but dryers are not as common. If you plan to do any dry cleaning, I would think about opening a true eco-friendly dry cleaning service. The equipment, chemicals and technique would have to be sourced abroad but the supplier might be eager to develop in the local market and provide early assistance.
